Review of Dollhouse by Anya Allyn

 Description:

Fifteen year old Aisha disappears in the forests on a school hiking trip. She's the latest in a string of children to vanish there over the past five years. The towns surrounding the forests are on edge and they demand answers. And wildboy Ethan—Aisha's boyfriend—is on the run after he and his grandfather are blamed for Aisha's disappearance.

Cassie is just about the only friend Ethan has left. She's been secretly in love with him ever since her mother dragged her to the wilds of Australia from Florida six months ago.

Desperate to prove Ethan's innocence, Cassie searches the forests with Ethan to find out what really happened to Aisha. But Ethan's growing strangely silent, and Cassie's left questioning if her feelings for him are clouding her judgment.

Cassie discovers a dark secret lurking in the heart of the forests; a secret world of nightmarish horrors—where nothing is as it seems, where the supernatural invades your soul, where the people she trusted most might be the people she can trust the least, and where escape exists only in dreams.

Review:

I got this book for free for my Kindle on Amazon.  As with all free books, I go in not knowing what to expect.  The story was more of a MG than a YA/teen book.  However, it turned out to be a great book.

It was full of creepy elements and had a very dark feel.  If I could explain it, think Tim Burton's Coraline crossed with Tim Burton's Alice and Wonderland.  It reads like a typical horror book, where the characters go in search of their missing friend without telling the police where they even are.  When they're in too deep, there's no one to rescue them.

I felt so bad for the MC, Cassie.  She has this huge crush on her friends boyfriend.  However much she feels for him, he feels that for her friend and will stop at nothing to find her.  I read the book until the end and am still wondering what the heck happened to Lacey.  She vanishes in the middle of the story and that's the end of her character for now.  It left a lot of questions.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book.  It's really hard to achieve that creepy Gothic feel in a book.  It takes a really great writer to pull it off and Anya Allyn did it.  I can't wait to find out what's going to happen in book two of the trilogy.  I give this book a solid four glittery stars because it's a spooky good read!
